Deltares has been involved
in the publication of the
Guideline for Adaptive
Concepts. It provides
administrators with
concrete suggestions for
planning flood defences
and spatial development
so that these two activities
will not clash in the
future, preventing wasted
investments and problems
with integration. Deltares
was involved, for example,
in a cost-benefit analysis
of adaptive concepts. The
guide and the cost-benefit
analysis can be found here:

Deltares has opened new
offices in Brazil (Rio de
Janeiro) and the United
Arab Emirates (Dubai). The
Deltares knowledge is a good
match for the questions
facing these regions in the
field of water, subsurface and
infrastructure. In addition,
the new offices will make
it easier to team up with
local research institutes.
Deltares already has offices
in Indonesia (Jakarta),
Singapore and the USA
(Silver Spring, Maryland).
NEW FOREIGN
BRANCHES
Suzanne van Eekelen, Adam Bezuijen
and Frits van Tol, Deltares researchers,
have won the International Geosynthetics
Society (IGS) award for their research
programme looking at piled embankments.
The IGS Award is the most prestigious
award granted by the IGS and it is handed
out once every four years to people or
groups who have completed research that
makes an exceptional contribution to the
development and use of geosynthetics.
A piled embankment consists of a
foundation of piles supporting a reinforced
soil surface.
The piled embankments are a good way of
building roads and railways on soft soil.
Deltares organised a three-
day course for staff from
the KIS (Kuwait Institute for
Scientific Research) about
risk assessment and mana-
gement in the construction
and maintenance of vital
infrastructure. Kuwait uses
the knowledge for a range
of purposes, including the
management and mainte
nance of the infrastructure
for the oil industry. The
course was a follow-up to
the agreement made by
Deltares and KIS in 2013
to work together more
closely on knowledge and
innovation.

KNOWLEDGE ABOUT SCHELDT
ESTUARY COLLECTED
With the aim of improving collaboration
between the relevant agencies in the
Netherlands and Belgium, a brochure has
been published describing the condition,
and the dynamics, of the Scheldt estuary.
The two countries collaborate in the
Flemish-Dutch Scheldt Commission on
the basis of the relevant treaties. The work
of the commission also includes research
and monitoring. A shared understanding
about the condition and dynamics
of the estuary is important to ensure
proper collaboration. Deltares has been
responsible for the Dutch knowledge base
in that respect, focusing in particular on
the behaviour of soil and water, such as
the development of channels and flats, the
tides, the role of human intervention and
the resulting ecological impact.
At present, knowledge is being developed to
support public initiatives that contribute to
a sustainable Scheldt. Deltares is directing
this process, ensuring that knowledge
generated by research is being integrated
with the knowledge of stakeholders.
