THE FUTURE-ROBUST CITY

Thoughtful and sustainable growth

In response to all the demands, structures and activities are tailored in line

with the natural water and soil system. In addition, changing conditions such

as growth, increasing demand for resources and climate change are taken

into account. Risks are identified in good time and appropriate solutions are

deployed. There is a transition to sustainable solutions. Knowledge of the water

and soil system is a regular component of the planning and decision-making

process, and of the design phase, allowing the city to grow sustainably, healthily

and safely while maintaining the balance with the local surroundings.

Room for the River

The course of the river becomes more

natural, creating more space for water

flows, nature and recreation.

Space used optimally

Abandoned industrial estates

are put to new uses, and made

safe and healthy.

More water and green spaces

Water and green spaces improve the living

environment, reduce the risk of heat stress

and help to make the water system robust.

Future-robust flood defences

Dike construction takes sea-level rise, land sub

sidence and climate change into account, using

natural elements where possible.

Water-robust building

During construction, flood risks are

taken into account so that damage is

limited when there is an emergency.

Sustainable water supplies

Water is stored, and used in times of

scarcity.

Facilitating decision-making

New working methods, fast models and serious

gaming are used to establish a picture of

difficulties and opportunities, and to develop

action perspectives.

Natural sources of energy

Heat and cold from water and the

subsurface are used for climate

control in buildings.

Multifunctional dike

The dike combines several functions,

allowing scarce space to be used optimally

and the dike to become a part of the living

environment.

Stable structures

During construction, variations in the

strength of the subsurface and the risk of

movement in the ground are taken into

account.
