ATES – shallow geothermal energy
Incorporating surface water in aquifer
thermal systems makes it possible to
enhance the energy capacity of the system.
It also opens up ways of improving water
quality in the summer and reduces the risks
for navigation in the winter. The main
challenge for this technology is the
prevention of biofouling in the pipeline
systems. Smart control systems linking
multiple buildings can reduce the peaks in
energy demand and lead to the better use
of the capacity of geothermal systems.
