Singapore: using water
sparingly
Sources of water are scarce on the densely-
populated island of Singapore. To safeguard
water supplies for its people in the future, the city
has introduced a range of measures. For example,
the city's waste water is recycled and extra parks
have been built to retain and treat rainwater, and to
cool o£ the tropical city. The most striking project
is the construction of the Marina Barrage. The
dam protects the city from flooding and creates a
freshwater reservoir in the middle of the city.
