Singapore: using water

sparingly

Sources of water are scarce on the densely-

populated island of Singapore. To safeguard

water supplies for its people in the future, the city

has introduced a range of measures. For example,

the city's waste water is recycled and extra parks

have been built to retain and treat rainwater, and to

cool o£ the tropical city. The most striking project

is the construction of the Marina Barrage. The

dam protects the city from flooding and creates a

freshwater reservoir in the middle of the city.

Hamburg Hafencity: flooding

Hamburg Hafencity has been transformed

from the old docks into a new residential

area. There is an open connection to the sea and

so floods are inevitable. Even so, it was decided not

to build any dikes. The new homes have been built
