28 DELTARES, OCTOBER 2019 Basic Hydraulics Course for Pressure Pipeline Systems During the Delft Software Days – Edition 2019, Deltares Academy will be organising the 'Reliability and Risk in Geotechnical Engineering Practice' course for geotechnical engineers. Geotechnical engineering works with high levels of uncertainty by comparison with other engineering disciplines. Estimates of soil and rock properties are usually based on a limited amount of soil research, even though there may be a lot of spatial variation. So it is hardly surprising that there have been rapid developments in the academic world in recent decades with regard to reliability and the approach to risk. At the same time, more and more engineering projects are required. Safety assessments for flood defences in the Netherlands have been fully probabilistic since 2017. This means that uncertainties in the technical design are taken into account explicitly. Uncertainties in geotechnical engineering Deltares ACADEMY Deltares Academy is offering a new one-day course for people who are going to follow one of the hydraulic courses and who want to brush up their basic knowledge of fluid mechanics. The emphasis in this basic course is on capacity calculations, taking into account various types of energy loss in pipes and components. After contami- nation in the pump impeller, gas bubble accumulation is the culprit that causes capacity loss 90% of the time. The extra energy costs can run into millions of euros. A robust design of the wastewater pressure pipeline prevents the formation of gas bubbles or ensures that they are removed quickly. The reception sump, pump and pressure pipeline all play a role and so the design process has not got any easier. This basic course provides the ideal knowledge boost so that you will be op- timally prepared to participate in one of the Deltares Academy hydraulic courses.
