Delta Life 10

31 DELTARES, September 2018 Deltares ACADEMY Thaiënne van Dijk affiliated to the University of Illinois D eltares has launched a series of in-depth webinars on social themes. The first in the series was about the dual role of water: as a raw material and as an auxiliary material. If we establish a clear picture of the system as a whole, it is possible to make the most of this resource without exhausting the system. That allows us to make the transition to a circular system. The second webinar looked at water quality and health. New measurement techniques, monitoring strategies and models provide us with a better picture of water quality and the opportunities for improvement. Increasingly, the general public is being given a role in research, for example by actively participating in measurement and monitoring: 'citizen science'. The third and final webinar in this series tackled the use of the CIrcle tool in order to identify the causes and consequences of the failure of critical infrastructure due to flooding. She will collaborate with Professor Jim Best on the coupling of morphodynamics of marine and river dunes to environmental parameters and to internal structures in the subsurface. These subjects are relevant to sediment transport and navigability, both offshore and in rivers. For Deltares, this research dovetails perfectly with our aims, themes and projects, and contributes to our goals of internationalisation.
