Deltares ORGANISATION Coastal expert Roderik Hoekstra (in the centre of the photo) of Deltares has won the Dredging and Port Construction Rising Star award. The jury praised his dedication and wide-ranging involvement in coastal and offshore engineering. Roderik: 'I am proud of the fact that I have seen for myself how the dredging industry delivers added value for our habitat in terms of safety, sustainability and efficiency. I have a huge admiration for the passion and perseverance of people working in this sector. I hope that I can continue to contribute in the future. I want to encourage students and young professionals to take on the challenges of the future together, to create a better world for ourselves and many future generations.' RODERIK HOEKSTRA WINS RISING STAR AWARD The Deltares geochemical microbiological laboratory has 'lent' iron-eating bacteria to NEMO Science Museum. The exhibition, which is about extreme eaters, shows what happens to nails in a bottle of water with bacteria. Don’t blink! The bacteria eat up the iron and the nails crumble. This can also happen to iron pipes in the ground. Deltares is teaming up with private bodies to look at how to prevent damage to underground metal infrastructure. IRON EATERS
