DOSSIER 9 SUSTAINABLE INFRASTRUCTURE Inmany countries, some of the wet infrastructure is due for replacement. Bridges, locks, and quays, but also railways and roads, on soft and wet subsurfaces are constantly under pressure. Heavy transport, land subsidence and extreme weather conditions cause problems. Replacement or renovation can easily cost billions. So building sustainable infrastructure straightaway is the smart option: it's better for the environment and better for the wallet, and it can cope with the developments expected with respect to use and the climate.
