Delta Life 8

29 DELTARES, OCTOBER 2017 The strategic alliance between Deltares and the National University of Singapore (NUS) has received the Winsemius Award for Sustaina bility & Innovation. The award is an initiative of the Dutch Chamber of Commerce in Singapore that is intended to encourage and reward the efforts of Dutch and Singaporean business. The jury said that NUSDeltares was 'a clear winner in terms of cooperation because their alliance connected different continents and has a huge potential impact on living conditions in densely-populated cities'. Locks, dams and pumping stations in the Netherlands were built with an expected lifespan of one hundred years. Is that figure still correct? The Water-Based Infrastructure (Natte Kunstwerken) knowledge programme, a joint programme involving TNO, Marin and Deltares, was established as a multi-year investment programme to learn more about the technical and functional life span of water-based infrastructure and to identify solutions for the upcoming replacement of that infrastructure, such as the use of fibre-reinforced plastics. Deltares ACADEMY Deltares ORGANISATION Winsemius Award for Deltares and the University of Singapore How long will the pumping station keep working? Roxana Sühring works as a marine scientist in offshore chemical assessment at the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS) in the United Kingdom. She came to Delft to participate in the Delft3D courses Flexible Mesh, Coastal Hydrodynamic Modelling and Environmental Modelling. 'In my work as a marine scientist, I am constantly looking for models that help me to conduct the best possible research. There are some models for my specialisation but most of them are closed source and developed only for specific circumstances. Delft3D provided me with exactly the models I was looking for. Thanks to the courses, which included a range of practical appli cations, I am now aware of all the functionalities of the model and I can work with it. Another good thing about these courses was that they combined the various problems you encounter in the sector.' Deltares has a wide range of courses on offer. During the year and specifically during large conferences, courses are arranged in clusters. For a full overview, see the Deltares Academy web page on deltares.nl .
