Delta Life 7

31 We conducted the first trial for an international client in the new Delta Flume in late 2016. We used waves measuring two metres to test innovative composite sheet piling that can be used as a flood defence. The piling was designed by the Armour Group from Australia. This new type of flood defence could be used where room for a dike is limited or where the subsurface is soft, as in parts of Indonesia. The composite sheet piling needs little maintenance and has a very long lifetime. Preliminary results indicate that it is strong enough. The official final report will follow. INTERNATIONAL TRIAL IN DELTA FLUME REVIEW DELFT SOFTWARE DAYS In the autumn of 2016, Delft was once again the place for the latest insights into software developments and big data. The Delft Software Days, twelve days with workshops, conferences and lectures, were a major success. A highlight this year was the course on Delft 3D Flexible Mesh river modelling. The course is an introduction to new software for river models with an emphasis on new interactive techniques. The special thing about this software: it is possible to model a river, even with sparse data. This makes it possible to provide quick assessments, for example about the navigability of a river. The Delft Software Days are an annual event where users and developers are given the opportunity to learn about the latest insights, products, tools, and open source software. The event is organised by Deltares, Delft University of Technology and UNESCO-IHE. Would you like to know more? The next edition will be in late October 2017 on the Deltares campus in Delft. Deltares will teamup with GNS Science, a leading research institute for earth and geosciences. GNS has extensive expertise in the field of geothermal energy, heat energy stored in the earth that they use to predict earthquakes and measure the effects. Deltares can use this knowledge in, for example, research into the earth quakes caused by gas extraction in Groningen (NL). In return, GNS Science is eager to tap into the knowledge that Deltares has about groundwater systems, for example in order to study the possible contamination of groundwater by cattle farming in New Zealand.
