DOCTORATE

All the knowledge about making the
Netherlands climate-proof in the
research programme ‘Knowledge for
Climate’ has been brought together
in nine different publications. Each
publication looks at a theme and there
is one overall book. The themes include
climate-robust cities, climate-robust
countryside, freshwater supplies and
water quality, and flood protection.
‘Knowledge for climate’ included inten
sive collaboration between researchers,
government authorities and business.
A range of instruments and services
were developed in collaboration, with
the emphasis on practical applicability.
Deltares was the coordinator of the
consortium ‘Freshwater supplies and
water quality’ and ‘Flood Protection’.

The future of delta cities
such as Jakarta and Bangkok
is threatened by sea-level
rise, but evenmore by land
subsidence reaching as much
as several metres a century.
Raising dikes fails to solve the
underlying problemof falling
groundwater levels. The
only sustainable remedy is
to combine urban functions
with a high water table.
These were themain
conclusions of the ‘Delta city
sustainability’ debate that
Deltares organised recently
in Rotterdam.
LAND SUBSIDENCE
REQUIRES CREATIVE
APPROACH
In June, Deltares grouped the test facilities for subsoil and groundwater
at its campus in Delft.
KNOWLEDGE ABOUT
CLIMATE ADAPTATION
POOLED
Deltares teamed up with
UNESCO-IHE last summer
in Vietnam to organise a
course on ‘Smart strategies
andmeasures for climate
adaptation in the Mekong
Delta’. The course was
for lecturers at different
universities who plan to
organise climate adaptation
courses for their master
students.
The course was set up
under the NICHE umbrella,
a capacity building project
financed by NUFFIC. It
supports the establishment
and upgrading of the Center
of Water Management and
Climate Change (WACC) of
the national university of Ho
Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM) and
its partner universities in the
Mekong Delta.
TRAINING FOR
MEKONG DELTA
Victor Beumer, a landscape
ecologist and a specialist
in eco-engineering with
Deltares, has been appointed
chair of the EU ‘Green Infra
structure’ working group of the
Water Technological Platform
(Research & Innovation Direc
torate-General). The working
group advises the EU about
the use of Green Infrastruc
ture for water treatment,
protection and storage. Over
the next year, the focus will be
on formulating business cases
with Green Infrastructure.

The newDelta Flume will be
used in November for the first
time. Building work on the
new flume on the Deltares
campus in Delft took almost
two years. The official open
ing ceremony will be next
spring.
With the newDelta Flume,
Deltares will have a unique
test facility where it will be
possible to test at full scale the
effect of extreme waves on
dikes, dunes or breakwaters.
There is considerable global
demand for the realistic test
ing of hydraulic structures.
Construction work on the
newDelta Flume started in
September 2012. The
flume is 300metres long,
9.5metres deep and
5metres wide. Waves with
heights of up to 4.5metres
can be generated. The new
Delta Flume will replace the
old Deltares Delta Flume in
the North-East Polder.
