DELTARES
IN BRIEF
RIO MAGDALENA
MODELLING
Deltares is working in Colombia
on a hydrodynamic model for
an 800-kilometre stretch of the
Rio Magdalena and a number
of branches of the river. The
client is CorMagdelena, the
river management authority.
CorMagdalena will use the
model to determine the impact
of a range of scenarios and
strategies on the water system.
INTEGRATED
WATER PLAN FOR
SOUTHERN MEXICO
The Mexican state of Tabasco
has called on the Dutch water
sector to tackle its recurring
flood problems. The Dutch
embassy in Mexico and the
Mexican government are
working on the development
of a partnership agreement
to support an integrated
approach. Deltares, Arcadis and
Fugro will certainly be involved.
Deltares will focus primarily
on working together with
other research institutes on
modelling and the deployment
of support tools for decision-
making, such as the map table.
D
eltares has conducted scale tests
on the immersion of the caissons
for the new storm surge barrier
to protect Venice. The tests
simulated the immersion of the caissons
at Chioggia, the southern entrance to the
Venetian Lagoon. The client was the Dutch
company Strukton Immersion Projects,
which will be responsible for installing the
caissons.
In the Atlantic Basin, the natural
conditions in the lagoon, such as waves
and currents, were reproduced in detail, as
was the complicated immersion system.
On the basis of the measurements
obtained about forces and movements,
a decision will be taken about how and
when the caissons can be installed.
Strukton will be immersing eight concrete
caissons in a trench in the bed. Operations
will start in the summer of 2014. Flap
gates, which Deltares has already tested,
will be mounted on the caissons to protect
Venice from flooding.
