D-Geo
Pipeline
rewritten
The D-Geo Pipeline programme,
which focuses on pipeline construction
and is used extensively for horizontal
directional drilling, has been rewritten
to comply with the recent amendment
to the NEN standard. Useful analysis
tools have also been added for users. As
international use of the programme has
increased, calculations in accordance
with the European Standard (EN) have
now become possible. The standard
design factors in the standard can now
be varied, creating more opportunities
for the optimisation of the design.
MorphAn 1.1
release
The release of MorphAn 1.1 means
that we now have a software tool
that can analyse and visualise data
relating to sandy coasts in a fast and
straightforward way. This makes
it possible to monitor coastline
development closely and allow
coastal managers to intervene in
time, for example in the form of beach
replenishment when there is a threat to
the hinterland. MorphAn can manage
sandy coasts more precisely and more
cost-efficiently.
The tool is being used in a range of
projects in the Netherlands, but it is
suitable for any sandy coast. It can
be downloaded free of charge from
morphan.deltares.nl. This site also
hosts a user forum for exchanges of
knowledge and experience. Deltares
developed MorphAn for Rijkswaterstaat
and STOWA.
COMPANIES WANTED
FOR JIP SAFETRENCH
Deltares aims to team up with other research institutes and
the corporate sector to launch an international research
project looking at adequate protection for undersea cables. The
standards in place at present are relatively conservative and
open to interpretation. By studying the question, Deltares hopes
to establish, for each type of subsurface, specific standards that
can be used as guidelines by the parties involved. It is expected
that this will result in major savings for companies and make
offshore energy more affordable.
Deltares wants to conduct the research in the form of a Joint
Industry Project (JIP) to be known as ‘JIP Safetrench’. A range
of international research institutes have already expressed an
interest in JIP Safetrench. Deltares is now looking for companies
who wish to participate. The research will be of particular
interest for owners of undersea cable networks such as wind-
energy companies, energy exporters and contractors. Local
government authorities, who are involved in permit procedures,
also have an interest and are welcome to participate.

ALLIANCE WITH BRAZIL
Deltares and the Brazilian organisation CEMADEN are teaming
up to improve forecasts of natural disasters such as floods
and landslides. CEMADEN is the national centre in Brazil for
monitoring and issuing warnings about natural disasters, and it
answers to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
In recent years, flash floods have claimed hundreds of casualties.
There were severe floods in early 2013, causing enormous
flows of mud and debris in the cities. Joint efforts will focus
initially on sharing knowledge about software models, and data
management for early flood and landslide warnings. CEMADEN
and Deltares will also be sharing their experience in the fields of
flood risk management, governance and communications.
