Deltares, spring 2020 4 Deltares In brief Quick scan warnsmunici- palities about foundation problems The dry spells in recent summers have raised awareness of land subsidence and damage to foundations. A problem is that many local authorities know very little about the risk of problems with foundations. Deltares has developed a systematic risk analysis approach for pile rot and the differential settlement of buildings on steel foundations. In combination with data about land subsidence, subsurface structure, groundwater levels, building data and expert estimates, this approach is the basis for a new quick scan focusing on the 'risk of foundation problems'. The quick scan provides a picture of spatial distribution and the potential damage between the present and 2050 at both the municipal and national levels, and with or without climate change. The scan allows municipal authorities to identify potential problems in good time. The results have been published on the klimaatschadeschatter.nl website (in Dutch, under the tab 'droogte'). The quick scan was conducted in collaboration with Kennis Centrum Aanpak Funderingsproblematiek (KCAF) and Stichting CAS as part of the NKWK Climate-Resilient City project. Towards circular aquaculture A quaculture is the fastest- growing food sector in the world but it also has a negative impact on the environment. Two United Nations sustainable development goals (SDGs) (SDG2: 'Zero hunger' and SDG14: 'Life below water') are at odds here. To resolve this conflict, the sector is working hard on a circular approach known as Inte grated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA). Fish excreta, for example, can be used as food for seaweed and shellfish. Researchers are testing different aspects of this concept at five locations in Europe and one location in China. As part of the EU project IMPAQT, Deltares is analysing the ecosystem services and producing complete IMTAmodels for two test locations. That helps not only the IMTA growers but also the permit authorities. IMPAQT is funded by the European Horizon2020 programme and it has been positively assessed by the European Commission.
