Deltares, spring 2020 11 Future deltas DOSSIER Howdo deltas change in the long term? What are the effects of climate change, sea level rise and land subsidence? But also: the effects of migration and population growth, economic develop- ment and geopolitical shifts? Important issues that Deltares has bundled in the Future deltas mission area. This dossier addresses different aspects of that mis- sion area. For example, we talked to the Delta Commissioner about the Dutch approach to preparing the delta in an adaptivemanner for 2100 and beyond. And we did the same for Bangladesh: as an emerging economy, this country is trying to combine flood riskmanage­ ment in a sustainable way with socio- economic progress for its inhabitants. In the San Francisco Bay Area, other factors play a role: a patchwork of local 'water solutions' are getting in the way of a joint approach. Finally, we look at how big data can be used to identify risks so that we can continue to live safely in the delta in the future.
