TOWARDS GLOBAL DATA SERVICES G lobalisation has impacted communities and people throughout the world, and it has significantly affected sustainable development. With new technologies as one of the major drivers, it is magnifying the effects of climate change. Supply chains, for example, are affected by climate change, resulting in planet-wide impacts that affect people all over the globe. The combination of increasing globalisation and climate change is resulting is an even-more pressing need for data and information with global coverage. Deltares has adopted the Global First approach: the development of models or algorithms on a global scale that can easily zoom in on a regional, or even local, scale, or the development of a local model which can scale up to a global level. This process began in the past and it has now reached the stage where it is generating interesting and valuable information. The data from five of these global models and algorithms are selected by Deltares for continuous delivery worldwide through services that are available on a digital platform. In the first phase, this platformwill deliver data from the following services: • Aqua monitor Historical land/water changes derived from satellite data • Global Storm Surge (Glossis) Ten-day water level and storm-surge forecasts with global coverage • Global Flood Forecast (Gloffis) Real-time water level and discharge forecasts with global coverage • Shoreline monitor Historical shoreline erosion and accretion • MetOcean database Historical wind and wave climates + statistics based on data from global models With the development of the global data services platform, the data from these five services can be combined and integrated to create new insights and solutions for global and local issues. Future developments will include improving the five models, adding new models and the transition to a platform community.
