5 R&D Highlights 2018 Social and economic impact This new theme is expected to have a social impact: the other research themes will profit from newmethods and data for modelling water- and soil-related issues. The modelling paradigms used currently will be disrupted and more effective paradigms will replace them. Collaboration with technological companies will also be intensified. New technologies will be evaluated and implemented for the water and subsoil domain. The services and products developed in the new theme will be used by Deltares and by our partners and clients. We already have a global open-source community for our software and we are currently working on new data services, for instance on the basis of the global simulationmodels for surface water, groundwater and hydrology. New technologies also encourage the involvement of the general public and stakeholders in citizen science projects and crowdsourcing activities.
