42 Aquatic ecosystems are vital natural resources that provide habitats for numerous species as well as drinking water and resources for industry and society. Pressures on ecosystems and the environment are increasing as the population and the economy grow. At the same time, governments are becoming more ambitious about protecting natural resources and the environment, and the sustainable use of resources, and there is increasing demand for ecosystem services. Deltares is developing knowledge about hydrodynamic, morphological, chemical and biological processes, and making that knowledge available through model and information systems for policy-makers, managers and users. Ecosystems and Environmental Quality
